Land Birds: Miscellaneous Larger Birds

Woodpeckers, Kingfishers

Three Kingfishers occur in the USA, but the Belted is the only widespread Kingfisher. Woodpeckers, with 22 species, are better represented. All woodpeckers tap their bills rapidly against wood or other resonant material (e.g.: roof gutter) to proclaim territory and attract mates; this drumming replaces song in most woodpecker species. Merlin app has recordings of drumming and will offer identification suggestions.
